Ghana, EU deepen security ties with landmark defence partnership.

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has described the defense and security pact with the European Union as very significant, especially amidst emerging security threats in the West African sub-region.

The Vice President was speaking during an official visit by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Her Excellency Ms. Kaja Kallas.

The visit culminated in the signing of the Ghana-European Union Security and Defence Partnership, a historic agreement that makes Ghana the first African country to enter into such a strategic arrangement. The partnership places Ghana alongside countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Norway.

Underscoring the renewed commitment to strengthening cooperation in peace and security, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang noted that sustained support to Ghana through the European Peace Facility has made a positive impact on over 30 projects.

"We are grateful for the European Union's consistent support in strengthening Ghana's security architecture. These interventions have made a real difference in our preparedness and response to emerging threats," she added.

A key highlight of the visit was the handover of critical security equipment, including Explosive Ordnance Disposal vehicles, counter-unmanned aerial vehicle systems, motorcycles, and drones, to Ghana's security agencies to enhance operational readiness.
