President John Dramani Mahama has been honored with the International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, becoming the first African President to receive the prestigious accolade.
"President Mahama's steadfast commitment to democratic governance, regional stability, and global engagement has shaped both Ghana and West Africa," the Council stated. "Through active leadership in ECOWAS, he has advanced diplomacy and conflict prevention while serving as a respected global voice on democracy and development."
The recognition places him among a select group of global leaders, including former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and former UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim.

In his acceptance speech, President Mahama dedicated the honour to the enduring legacy of Africa's founding leaders, citing Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda. He noted that their vision and sacrifices continue to guide his efforts toward unity, justice, and progress across the continent.
In a moment of reflection, the President described his time in public office as a "worthwhile journey," stating that he has "done his best" and allowed history to judge his service. He highlighted Ghana's strong democratic credentials, emphasising that the nation's judiciary has earned public confidence through its independence, fairness, and commitment to upholding the rule of law.
